What is the Difference Between Juvederm Voluma & Juvederm Voluma XC?

Juvéderm Voluma XC® is a non-surgical, injectable filler which is composed of hyaluronic acid. Nowadays, most patients prefer a more natural look and are trying to avoid plastic surgery and a facelift at all costs. Through the use of these volumizing facial fillers, the necessity of plastic surgery is becoming less and less necessary. The invention of these injectable gels has been miraculous to correct age-related volume loss. The Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that appears in your own skin and restores lost collagen.

Juvederm Voluma XC is FDA approved to inject into the mid-face to lift the cheek area. The benefit of Juvederm Voluma XC is that it replaces the collagen or volume that is lost as we age. This unique, injectable, dermal filler has a “sponge-like” property that gives the cheek area a special “lift” with elegant results. Since Juvederm Voluma is a water based collagen stimulator, it will replace lost volume and create a natural lift in the cheeks, improve the appearance of jowls, and create an overall younger looking appearance. Facial fillers have been a part of cosmetic dermatology now for over 20 years, with both the dermatologist and plastic surgeons incorporating them into their arsenal of anti-aging treatments.

Who might be a candidate for Juvederm Voluma XC

As we age, we typically have moderate to severe volume loss. The older we are, the more volume loss occurs. Very thin people typically have the most volume loss. Since thin patients typically have the least amount of fat in their faces, particularly in the mid-face, they may need the most amount of volume restored. Another factor in determining dermal filler replacement is skin laxity. Although Juvederm Voluma XC is most commonly injected into the cheek area, it can also used in the chin, nasolabial folds, and other areas of collagen loss. One of the main benefits of Juvederm Voluma XC besides its ability to restore lift and natural volume, is its longevity. Juvederm Voluma typically lasts up to two years in duration, depending on how many syringes are injected into a given area. Juvederm Voluma can also be combined with other FDA approved injectables such as Botox or Dysport, Radiesse, and other Allergan HA fillers such as Juvederm Volbella for fine lines and Juvederm Xc Ultra Plus for lips. Different types of dermal fillers are used in various areas of the face depending on the depth of the wrinkles and the amount of volume lost. An expert injector, like Dr. Michele Green, will match the correct product with the area of the face that needs rejuvenation.

Facial rejuvenation with non-surgical fillers is typically a simple and painless process. Patients come into the office for a consultation with Dr. Michele Green and she will discuss the areas of concern and mark the face accordingly. The decision will be made as to which areas of the face and which product would be best suited to maximize results. The patients then will be numbed with a topical local anesthetic, a quick acting topical lidocaine compound, for about 30 minutes. There is lidocaine contained in the hyaluronic acid injectables such as Juvederm and Juvederm Voluma. However, additional topical numbing cream makes the patient more comfortable for the procedure. Injections of Juvederm typically take 15 to 30 minutes depending on what areas are injected and if the injectable fillers and being combined with Botox or laser treatments. The most common side effects of dermal fillers are swelling and localized bruising which typically resolves in less than one week. In order to prevent these potential side effects or bruising, we recommend discontinuing all blood thinners, multi-vitamins, and herbal supplements for at least one week before dermal fillers. In addition, taking Arnica or treating the bruised area with the V-Beam pulsed dye laser can help this bruising heal more rapidly. Only rare allergic reactions to Juvederm Ultra xc and Juvederm Voluma has been described in the literature. Juvederm Voluma is one of the safest hyaluronic acid injectable treatments on the market.
