As we age, one of the side effects is that our skin loses some of its elasticity, which can cause lines and wrinkles to appear. In addition to this, exposure to UV light can also break down the collagen and the fibers in our skin which connect it together.
The good news is that there are a number of treatments that can be applied to the skin to help reduce the appearance of both wrinkles and fine lines. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles or lines that you are looking to treat, along with the location of the issue, this will determine the best course of action in treating it. Some other factors may also be a consideration such as the type of treatment that is suitable for the individual and the length of time that the process applied is effective for.
For those individuals who have minor to moderate wrinkles and fold lines that appear in and around the mouth or the nose area, such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines, then one of the treatments that we often recommend is Juvederm Ultra Plus / Juvederm Ultra Plus XC.

What is Juvederm Ultra Plus and how does it work?
Juvederm Ultra Plus is an FDA approved dermal filler from Allergan that is made from hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring substance that is found in humans. This substance’s role in the human body is to provide nutrients and retain water and act as a cushioning agent for the skin. Over time and as we age, we lose some of this naturally occurring substance. In these cases a dermal filler such as Juvederm Ultra Plus can be used to temporarily reverse the effects of this by adding a gel back into the body. To achieve this, Juvederm Ultra Plus is injected into the skin, specifically placed to key target locations where the folds and wrinkles occur. When the Juvederm Ultra Plus gel is injected into the skin, the appearance of wrinkles, lines and folds can be reduced for a year, sometimes longer.
The Juvederm Ultra Plus filler has a number of key benefits. Firstly, it is quite a long-lasting treatment, with results from the procedure lasting 12 to 18 months in length. In addition to this, along with this being an effective treatment, because the gel is based on a naturally occurring substance that is already found in the body most individuals can accommodate the treatment and side effects are typically minimal. Side effects that can occasionally occur are normally short lasting and generally are caused by the injection themselves, for example some minor swelling, redness or itchiness may take place.

Another benefit of having Juvederm Ultra Plus is that the treatment is fast acting. Generally, the results can be seen almost immediately, although the gel itself may take a few days to settle down. One of the key attractions to this particular treatment is that for the most part, an individual only requires one session to gain the full benefits. Occasionally it may be advised to have a follow up procedure to provide some minor touch-ups to the treatment, but this is not always required.
Compared to other Juvederm fillers, Juvederm Ultra Plus is thicker than Juvederm, but not as thick as Juvederm Voluma. It works best for individuals looking to reduce wrinkles, fine lines and folds in the mouth and nose area, and are looking for a fast acting, and quick to administer treatment with results that can last a long time. It can also be combined with other treatments and fillers, such as the patient example above, where Juvederm and Botox are both used. In some cases, it can be used with other fillers such as Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk or Dysport too.

And in all cases, it is a quick treatment that can even be done on your lunch break, with only some potential inflammation around the injection site – though to determine what level of sensitivity you may have, it is best to discuss this and your medical history with your dermatologist prior to your first treatment.
