In the ever-changing world of cosmetic dermatology, advancements are made on a day-to-day basis. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have become an indispensable treatment option for facial wrinkles and fine lines, frown lines, smile lines, and volume loss. The popularity of injectable fillers for facial enhancement has continually propelled the development of new and exciting formulations. Dr. Michele Green was one of the first dermatologists in NYC to incorporate Restylane® hyaluronic acid fillers into the treatment plans of her patients to achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The recent introduction of Restylane Contour into the Restylane family of products further expands the possibilities for facial rejuvenation with filler. On the forefront of cosmetic dermatology for over 25 years in New York, Dr. Green is one of the first dermatologists to bring Restylane Contour into her private boutique practice.
What is Restylane Contour?
Restylane Contour is a newly-designed injectable filler manufactured primarily for cheek augmentation. This hyaluronic acid filler is manufactured by Galderma, a trusted leader in skincare, and utilizes Xpreshan technology to improve midface contour deficiencies and volume loss. The benefit of the Xpreshan technology is that it enhances skin elasticity, provides contour, and restores facial volume while still allowing for natural, beautiful facial expression.
How does Restylane Contour work?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance in the body that plays a pivotal role in stimulating collagen production and maintaining the youthful appearance of the skin. The amount of hyaluronic acid that’s naturally produced decreases with age. Hyaluronic acid fillers make it possible to target areas that need a boost in volume, smooth out fine lines, wrinkles and folds, and plump the skin to restore suppleness.
Restylane Contour is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid gel filler for correcting lost volume and elasticity in the midface. Full, voluminous cheeks are often the foundation of a youthful appearance, and tend to lose volume over time, contributing to aging the face. Restylane Contour is designed to restore a youthful appearance while allowing for lively and natural facial expression. The hyaluronic acid dermal filler is injected into areas of collagen loss to provide volume, smooth out the appearance of fine lines, and enhance facial contour.
How does Restylane Lyft compare to Restylane Contour?
Restylane Contour was FDA approved in June 2021 for cheek augmentation and correction of midface contour deficiencies for adults over 21 years of age. Restylane Contour is Galderma’s first formulated product, released in the U.S., with XpresHAn Technology (TM) for the cheeks. XpresHAn technology (TM) integrates directly into the skin, in the area of injection, and allows dynamic expression while your face is smiling and talking. Previously, Restylane Lyft (formerly known as Perlane), was used to restore volume loss in the midface, smile lines, jaw line, marionette lines, pre-jowl sulcus, and the back of hands. Both dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid fillers and will improve and lift the cheek area and mid-face.

How does Restylane Contour compare to Juvederm Voluma?
The newest addition to the Restylane family of products, Restylane Contour, may be most comparable to the Allergan-manufactured Juvederm Voluma. Restylane and Juvederm are both distinguished and exceptional hyaluronic acid gel filler, designed for injection in the mid-face. The formulation of Juvederm Voluma has a consistency which is smooth and gel-like, giving it the ability to quickly diffuse into tissue and provide an immediate lift. Restylane Countour is formulated with a granular or particulate gel, and also lifts and targets the cheeks and mid-face.
Juvederm® Voluma and Restylane Contour both offer unique benefits when it comes to facial rejuvenation. As an injector, Dr. Green tailors each of her patients’ treatment plans to their individual needs and goals, relying on her expert knowledge of injectables in order to determine which treatment will give you the best cosmetic results. For a customized approach to aesthetic facial contouring, Restylane or Juvederm – or a combination of the two – may be used to achieve the best outcome for facial rejuvenation, stimulate new collagen, and restore volume loss.
How does Restylane Contour compare to Restylane Lyft and other Restylane products?
Restylane fillers have quickly become a favorite since the original Restylane hyaluronic acid filler was FDA-approved in 2003. The Restylane family of products is manufactured utilizing a unique NASHA technology, giving each product its own distinguished particle size. The anatomic area of treatment and the depth of the wrinkles or volume loss being treated are taken into consideration when selecting the most appropriate Restylane filler for treating a patient. The complete line of products includes Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Skin Boosters, and now, Restylane Contour.
Restylane-L is the original Restylane injectable filler, used for treating moderate facial wrinkles such as the corners of the mouth, marionette lines, laugh lines, and the tear trough area (under eye area). Restylane is also an ideal injectable for natural, soft lip injections. Restylane can provide facial symmetry, increase lip plumpness, define the “cupid’s bow” and restore lost volume in the chin, oral commissures, nasolabial folds, and lines around the mouth. Restylane produces an extremely natural appearance and through pan-facial rejuvenation, or a “liquid face lift”, can restore volume and rejuvenate the entire face.
Restylane Lyft is the firmest formulation of Restylane dermal fillers. Restylane Lyft is indicated for injection into the deep dermis for treating nasolabial folds and marionette lines, helping to restore hollowness, and enhancing the cheeks, chin, and jawline. Additionally, Restylane Lyft can be used for the purpose of revitalizing the hands. Over time, volume in the hands is lost, leading to the increasing prominence of wrinkles and veins. Restylane Lyft is firm to palpation and provides a stable structure and contour to the areas it is injected, making it an adequate dermal filler for hand rejuvenation.
Restylane Kysse and Restylane Silk are typically used for lip augmentation, shaping the lips, and smoothing fine lines around the mouth. The formulation of these dermal fillers provide for flexible movement of the lips with natural looking volume restoration.

Restylane Refyne is used to help minimize the appearance of moderate laugh lines and smile lines. Restyland Defyne may be preferred over Restylane Refyne for treatment of deeper laugh lines and smile lines. Restylane Defyne is typically used for chin augmentation. Using Restylane Defyne for improving the overall appearance of a recessed chin is an outstanding alternative to plastic surgery. The texture of Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne allows for flexibility of facial expressions, providing an overall natural, softened, and enhanced look.
Used strategically, the Restylane family of products can provide complete facial rejuvenation and improve signs of aging in order to achieve a youthful, refreshed, and beautiful appearance. As an added bonus, the majority of Restylane products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, in order to minimize discomfort associated with injections.
Can I combine Botox and Filler treatments?
Botox and Restylane are both excellent cosmetic treatments for facial rejuvenation, though they do cater to different areas of facial concern. Botox is a neurotoxin and is used to soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. Restylane injections are composed of hyaluronic acid and are used to replace volume loss, treat facial sagging, fine lines, and deeper wrinkles. The wrinkles which form independently of active facial expression can be effectively treated with Restylane injections. Both cosmetic treatments are frequently used together for strategic pan-facial rejuvenation. An expert injector, such as Dr. Michele Green, can elevate your cosmetic treatment plan by integrating both Botox and dermal fillers to achieve a natural, youthful, beautiful facial rejuvenation.
Are there any side effects to Restylane Contour?
Common side effects of cosmetic injections may include a mild amount of bruising, swelling, tenderness, and redness at injection sites. Arnika is an herbal supplement that can be used several days in anticipation of dermal filler treatment to prevent and treat bruising.
Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions, keloid scarring, outbreak of herpes simplex virus, and superficial necrosis at the site of the injection. Unintentional injection of dermal filler into a blood vessel can cause serious complications, including blindness. The safety of Restylane injections while pregnant or breastfeeding has not been established and should be avoided. If you experience any perceived allergic reaction, it is best to immediately contact your treating physician.
Severe allergies to Restylane are uncommon. However, if you have a history of severe allergic reaction, a history of anaphylaxis, or are allergic to either lidocaine or gram-positive bacterial proteins, it is suggested to avoid Restylane injections. If you have a history of scarring or are taking medications that can cause prolonged bleeding, ensure that you review your entire medical history with Dr. Green before considering any cosmetic dermal filler injections.
Can Restylane promote natural collagen production?
Collagen provides the skin with a structural foundation, boosting skin elasticity and resiliency that contributes to firm, plump, suppleness. Having subsequent treatments of Restylane injections can encourage the body to synthesize new collagen. Repeat injections of Restylane into acne scars encourages new collagen production and helps reduce the appearance of scars.
Can Restylane filler be dissolved?
Restylane can be dissolved with the injection of Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid filler. Depending on the amount of filler initially injected and the viscosity of each injectable, varying amounts and number of treatments of Hyaluronidase may be required for complete dissolution.
What is the price for Restylane injections?
The cost of treatment with Restylane injectable filler varies depending on the number of syringes used, the experience level of the injector, and the type of Restylane filler used.
