Trends in Asian Skin Treatments
When it comes to dermatology treatments, each patient has their own unique needs. It is important to keep in mind that within the range of treatments, some procedures are designed for specific skin types and textures. There are several very popular laser and cosmetic injections which are specifically suited for darker skin tones and Asian skin, such as Thermage for skin tightening, Botox for non-surgically reducing the jaw line, as well as combining it with Juvederm and Restylane for non-surgical nose jobs. Other popular options include eMatrix, and PRP with microneedling.
We are often asked about Thermage as a treatment as it is often more available and less expensive in New York than it is in Asia. Thermage is used to help reduce sagging skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles. As we age, collagen is lost within the skin, and this process promotes an increase in both wrinkles and sagging skin. The way Thermage works is that it helps to encourage the natural production of collagen, in turn helping to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and ultimately tighten the skin.
In addition, the new Thermage FLX treatment can work up to 25% faster than previous treatments. This is because the tips that are used to treat the patient are 33% larger than before, and also means you can even fit in an appointment during your lunch break.
Botox Jaw Reduction for Masseter Muscle
Another area that is popular with Asian patients is one that can help achieve a more contoured and sculptured jaw line. A rounded jaw line is caused by the configuration of the “masseter” muscles that are located on the sides of the face and jawline. One method of achieving a visible reduction in this area quickly is by using Botox. When this is injected into the masseter muscle it helps relax it, in turn giving the jawline a more sculptured appearance.
The great news about this treatment is that it is extremely quick to perform, since only one injection is normally required in each side of the jaw. More information on how this treatment works can be found here.
eMatrix Skin Rejuvenation
Another treatment that is suitable for sensitive and darker skin tones, is the eMatrix™ which works well at treating a range of issues from wrinkles, to skin damage that may be caused by acne or exposure to the sun for example. The way this treatment works is that it uses bipolar RF (radiofrequency) energy which heats below the skin itself, to help promote the production of collagen. This helps to tighten the skin, and improve the overall look and feel of the skin. Traditionally, fractional lasers cannot be used on darker skin tones, but the eMatrix™ system can be used on Asian skin types, so is commonly one of our recommended methods for improvements on this type of skin.
