Dr. Michele S. Green answers some of the more Frequently asked questions about Kybella for Submental Fullness (Double Chin).
Q: What is Kybella?
Kybella is a new injectable treatment for submental fat (double chin) that can significantly improve the chin contour to give you a younger looking more sculpted neck without the need for surgery.
Q: What is Kybella made out of?
Kybella was FDA approved in May of 2015 and it is made of deoxycholic acid which is a naturally occurring material in our body that helps break down fat and absorb it.
Q: What is Kybella used for?
Similar to injections of Botox to reduce fine lines and Juvederm or Restylane to plump up the skin, we now have Kybella injections to help diminish the fat under the neck and chin which would have previously required liposuction or a neck lift. Kybella may reduce the submental fat (double chin) and improve the cosmetic appearance of the jawline to provide a more youthful look.
Q: Does Dr. Green have experience with Kybella?
Dr. Green was one of the first physicians to introduce Kybella to her NYC / Manhattan dermatology practice. Since she is a NY Superdoctor and Castle Connolly nominated physician Dr. Green is one of the leading cosmetic dermatologists in her field. Dr. Green was voted as New York Magazine’s BEST Doctors because of her cutting edge cosmetic and anti-aging treatments. Dr. Michele Green performs Kybella injections daily in her private NYC dermatology office.
Q: What causes submental fat (double chin) and who is affected?
The most common cause of submental fat is genetic. Even young patients can have submental fat or a double chin. As we age and gain weight, the double chin gets heavier and makes us look older. In a recent study about cosmetic procedures, the neck area (submental fat) was the second most popular area that patients wanted treated.
Q: How many treatments do I need for Kybella?
The average number of treatments is three to four treatments, but it can take up to five treatments depending on the amount of fat and your response. Dr. Michele Green will coordinate a treatment plan based on your anatomy, physiology, and goals.
Q: What happens immediately after Kybella? What happens to the skin on my neck?
Amazingly, in most patients, the skin of the neck will also tighten as a result of the injections and is an added benefit to the injections.
Q: What is the downtime after the injection?
Most patients will have some immediate swelling after the procedure and for the first few days after the procedure. The swelling can last for a few days up to five days total. There may also be some localized bruising as with any injection. Typically the first injection has the most swelling since the most fat is dissolved during the first series of injections.
Q: How quickly will I see results?
The typical results will appear within 4 to 6 weeks and continue to improve as additional treatments are performed.
Q: Do Kybella injections hurt?
Dr. Michele Green numbs each patient with lidocaine immediately before she injects Kybella to make you very comfortable and the procedure painless.
Q: Are the results of Kybella permanent?
Once the double chin is treated, as long as you do not gain weight in that area, the treatment can last long term. Unlike fillers or Botox injections which must be repeated, Kybella offers a long term solution for submental fat (double chin).
Q: Who is NOT a candidate for Kybella?
If you have severe skin laxity you may be a candidate for a traditional neck lift instead of Kybella. If you suffer from swallowing problems you may not be a candidate for Kybella. Dr. Michele Green will review your medical history and your anatomy at length to see if you are a good candidate for this or any other cosmetic procedure.
Q: Is Kybella safe?
Kybella has been extensively studied and tested and approved by the FDA and is safe for the treatment of submental fat by qualified dermatologists who have been trained in this procedure.

Q: Can Kybella be combined with other treatments?
Yes, Kybella can be combined with other treatments such as Juvederm Voluma or Botox or Thermage for skin tightening. However, Dr. Green advises against having other lasers or injections performed that same week.
Q: How much does Kybella cost?
Kybella is priced based on your anatomy and how many injections you will need based on the size of your submental fat. When you schedule your consultation with Dr. Michele Green and her staff they will gladly review pricing options and the procedure with you.
Q: Who makes Kybella?
Kybella is manufactured and distributed by Allergan who are the same makers of Botox, Voluma, and Juvederm, which have been used for many years by cosmetic physicians such as Dr. Michele Green in her private NYC / Manhattan dermatology office on the Upper East Side.
