Restylane® Refyne & Restylane® Defyne Dermal Fillers

As we age, our skin starts to lose collagen, and this volume loss combined with the development of fine lines and wrinkles, start to show the visible signs of aging. Non-invasive injectable treatments, with Botox and dermal fillers, like Restylane Refyne and Juvederm, have become a popular approach to reducing facial lines and hollows.

Restylane Refyne is the next-generation hyaluronic acid filler that is designed to create younger-looking skin. It’s FDA-approved to correct the appearance of nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and other wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Its XpresHAn Technology uses innovative cross-linking to replace lost volume with a natural appearance, and allow natural movement after cosmetic injection. Restylane Refyne, and the family of Restylane fillers, will create a more youthful appearance, which requires zero downtime, during a single treatment.

Dr. Michele Green is an expert in cosmetic injections, with over 25 years of experience in cosmetic dermatology. Voted consistently as one of the best doctors in NYC by Castle Connolly and Top Doctors, her “less is more” philosophy and natural approach to cosmetic procedures, make her a favorite injector in New York. What is Restylane® Refyne?

Restylane Refyne is an innovative dermal filler that’s designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by correcting age-related volume loss that can create deeper creases in the skin. It’s a part of Galderma’s Restylane family of hyaluronic acid fillers, all with unique formulations to best target different areas of facial contouring. The Restylane products include Restylane L, Restylane Lyft,  Restylane Silk, Restylane Kysse, and Restylane Defyne.

A Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler is a gel that is based around a naturally-occurring substance found in the body. It is a transparent substance that is injected in the skin, which in turn creates additional volume within the skin resulting in the smoothing out and reshaping of the lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are often used on the face to provide a more youthful appearance and reduce the visible signs of aging.

Though Restylane Refyne was only recently approved by the FDA, it has been used in Europe for anti-aging treatments since 2010 under the name Emervel. Restylane Refyne uses it’s active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, to naturally increase collagen production in the skin, which is able to improve the elasticity of the skin and restore volume along the treatment area.

Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne dermal Fillers

Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne have subtle differences in formulation, but both are designed to target folds and wrinkles around the mouth and nose. They both use unique cross-linking technology to create a youthful appearance without limiting natural expressions. According to clinical studies, both Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne help to maintain normal facial expressions and movement while simultaneously reducing signs of aging on the skin.

What is the difference between Restylane Refyne and Defyne?

The primary difference between Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne is the level of severity each is designed to treat. Typically, Restylane Refyne is used to treat mild-to-foderate facial wrinkles and folds, whereas Restylane Defyne is best for moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Both Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne have unique cross-linking technology to correct volume loss, but the two formulations create flexibility when it comes to reducing a variety of fine lines and wrinkles due to the natural aging process.

The key difference between Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne is that they differ in the amount of cross-linking found within the gel, which determines the amount of flexibility and support that the gels provides. Simply, Restylane® Refyne is a more flexible gel, whereas Restylane® Defyne is a more supportive gel, which can be used together to enhance and treat these deeper lines and wrinkles.

What is Restylane® Defyne?

Restylane Defyne is a hyaluronic acid filler that reduces moderate-to-severe signs of aging around the nose and mouth. Similarly to Restylane Refyne, it uses XpresHAn technology which allows the hyaluronic acid to cross-link with the skin cells, creating an incredibly natural look. The new XpresHAn Technology allows the Hyaluronic Acid gel to flex within your skin to move as you move your face. No matter what type of facial expression you make, whether it be smiling or frowning, the filler will not appear stiff or lumpy and the results will appear soft and natural.

Can you use Restylane Defyne in lips for natural results?

Just like Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne is an excellent way to treat folds and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. However, there are more optimal solutions for lip augmentation which Dr. Green can recommend.

Who is a candidate for Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne?

A good candidate for Restylane Defyne or Restylane Refyne is anyone who is struggling with the appearance of folds and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. In general, Restylane products are safe to use and have incredibly minimal side effects, if any, including mild swelling or redness at the injection site. However, if you have severe allergies to lidocaine (a mild anesthetic), have a bleeding disorder, or are currently breastfeeding, Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne are contraindicated.

The most important part of treatment for any injectable is who you choose to be your injector. Dr. Green is an experienced, artful injector who will make sure that the experience is as comfortable, safe, and satisfactory as possible. However, medical spas often have inexperienced injectors which can lead to more serious side effects, such as a risk of infection through unintentional injection into a blood vessel. For this reason, your dermal filler injections should always be done by a expert board-certified dermatologist, like Dr. Michele Green.

Can Restylane Refyne or Restylane Defyne be combined with other anti-aging or skin care procedures?

Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne can both be combined with other anti-aging or skin care procedures. Often, patients are interested in using complementary injectables such as Botox or Dysport for pan-facial rejuvenation, which can create a “liquid facelift.” Dr. Green is an expert in anti-aging and rejuvenating skin care procedures, including laser treatment, chemical peels, Thermage, CoolSculpting, and injectables.
