Sleeping on Wet Hair: Pioneer Woman asks Dr. Green
While most dermatologists will recommend showering at night vs in the morning since its better for your skin, helps remove dirt and sweat from the day and allows you to get into a bed thats cleaner too, where you won’t have to sleep in previous day’s odors. But, what about washing your hair? A lot of people prefer to wash their hair at night but need to do so a bit ahead of bedtime. That’s what the Pioneer Woman asks in “Should You Sleep on Wet Hair? Here’s What the Experts Say” and the short answer? No, you shouldn’t. “It is always better to dry your hair prior to going to bed to protect it and keep it healthy,” says Dr. Michele Green.
“Wet hair strands, in their fragile state, are significantly more prone to damage than dry hair strands,” Green explains. She also talks about how bacteria and yeast production can exacerbate scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, psoriasis, and folliculitis. However she also mentions potential solutions such as air drying and silk bonnets or even silk pillowcases, which can reduce friction on the hair. Overall though, try not to sleep on wet hair – citing that prior to bedtime, “the hair should be dried with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt, which minimally damages the fragile hair strands.”
