Today’s Parent Asks Dr. Green If Hair Dye Is Safe During Pregnancy
When it comes to beauty routines and pregnancy, one topic that often spark debate is the use of hair dye. Today’s Parent published an article “Can You Dye Your Hair While Pregnant?”, this week where board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michele Green helps separate fact from myth.
According to Dr. Green, the main concern arises in the first trimester, when a baby’s organs and systems are developing. “This is because the first 12 weeks of fetal development are essential for the baby’s major organs and systems,” she explains. While hair dye chemicals such as ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, paraphenylenediamine (PPD), and resorcinol may raise concern, studies show that only minimal amounts are absorbed through the skin at salon or consumer levels.
For those looking to minimize risk, Dr. Green recommends natural or plant-based colorants like henna, indigo, or chamomile, which she notes are considered safe options during pregnancy; though they may not produce dramatic results. She cautions, however, against so-called black henna products, which can contain PPD and are not approved for direct application to the skin.

Dr. Green also suggests gentler alternatives, such as at-home glosses and toners to enhance shine, or non-permanent root-touch-up sprays and powders, which coat the hair rather than absorbing into the scalp. And for those who prefer to skip the dye entirely, she adds that embracing your natural color has its own advantages: “Zero chemical exposure, fewer salon visits, and extra savings from not keeping up with regular touch-ups.
