When it comes to losing weight, the majority of the work is accomplished through eating healthly and from exercise. However, for many women and men, even though they do all the right things, some stubborn fat can remain and can be very difficult to shift. Historically, the only way this excess fat could be treated was through surgical treatments such as tummy tucks or liposuction. These are expensive procedures, and in addition to that, for many, the thought of surgery is unappealing for a number of reasons.
The good news is that surgery is not the only option any more. Modern technology has come to the rescue and has provided a range of alternative non-surgical fat reduction treatments that are relatively fast acting and most importantly, effective.
A phrase that has become more popular over the last few years is “Fat Freezing” and the brand name that has become very well known for this process is CoolSculpting®. This treatment uses a methodology called cryolipolysis, which aims to cool down and freeze the fat cells in the target area that is being treated, upon which the body’s own metabolic systems eject the fat cells from the body. Results from CoolSculpting® typically occur from two to four months after the treatments have taken place.
*Disclaimer: Results may vary with each patient.
CoolSculpting is a treatment that can be used on a number of places of the body where fat accumulates, and is great at tackling areas where it is hard to shift the excess fat through traditional diet and exercise alone. It can be used on the abdomen, to reduce the size of the stomach area, but as a treatment it can be used in other areas too. Other great options for this procedure include the arms, thighs and even the hips (love handles).
Another area where stubborn fat can linger and can be very difficult to shift is under the chin. The good news is that there are some dedicated treatments that can target this area specifically to help improve the look of this area. One of these treatments is called the CoolMini – which is based on the CoolSculpting® treatment but instead uses a smaller applicator to target a particular area of the body. The same “fat-freezing” process is employed to remove fat from under the chin and results are quite fast. Improvements may occur within one to three months after the treatment has been completed.
Other methods of non surgical fat removal beyond CoolSculpting
An alternative method to remove fat under the chin is Kybella which is a treatment that uses injections of deoxycholic acid into the chin area that then breaks down the fat cells in the body. Kybella normally requires two to four treatments to achieve the best results and these injections are usually spaced out a month apart.
The best option for treating under chin fat can be determined by a few factors such as the size and shape of the target area. The best course of action for individuals looking to treat this area is to discuss with Dr. Green what the most appropriate option is.
In addition to that, some doctors may also recommend SculpSure, which seeks to melt fat cells using heat. Find out the differences between CoolSculpting and Sculpsure here. Another similar non-surgical fat reduction procedure out there is InstaLipo, which uses red light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) to target unwanted fat cells, while Vanquish is also a popular body contouring procedure some patients ask us about.
Both treatments are noninvasive and require no anesthesia. Post-treatment both procedures may have some form of side effects. With SculpSure there may be pain associated with heat, blistering, nodules and swelling. Side effects of CoolSculpting may consist of some temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling and pain.
