For many people removing unwanted hair can become a burden, which not only takes time, it also costs money and in some cases, can cause skin issues. Depending on whether you shave, wax, or use hair removal creams, these techniques can cause skin irritation, redness, swelling and even bruising. For some individuals, these issues can cause distress and therefore a more long term solution is something that is welcomed.
Until just a few years ago, the only recognized way to remove hair was the tedious and time-consuming process of electrolysis. Now, there’s another option: laser hair removal. However, laser hair removal treatments differ across various types of skin.
For individuals with light skin, our practice recommends using the GentleLase®, laser system; the latest laser technology that delivers fast, effective treatments for both men and women with medium to light complexions. Alternatively, for individuals with darker skin tones, our preference is to use a different method, the GentleYAG® system.
Introducing GentleLase Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal can be performed on various parts on the body, from the legs or bikini area, to the abdomen, under arms, neck and face. Laser hair removal focuses the power of laser energy directly at the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs this energy, causing the hair to die at the root. Laser hair removal in fact is the only hair removal method that offers the option of removal or just thinning out the density of your hair. Dr. Michele Green can discuss what the best option for you is.
For patients with light skin tones, Dr. Green uses GentleLase®, a revolutionary long-pulse high-energy Alexandrite laser, which offers superior results for treating unwanted hair. GentleLase® features a Dynamic Cooling Device where cryogen is misted onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing increased comfort. Each time the laser pulses, your skin is cooled to ensure a safe and comfortable treatment. GentleLase® selectively helps to protect the skin, while effectively treating the unwanted hair. The good thing about the GentleLase® treatment for hair removal is that this is a proven technology that has treated thousands of individuals and has been used for many years.
What to Expect from GentleLase Laser Hair Removal
During your treatment, the laser emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin where it can be absorbed by the targeted hair follicle. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair follicle without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Most visible hairs vanish immediately. Over a period of 10 to 14 days, the remaining hair disappears.
The procedure can take as little as 10 to 15 minutes depending on the area treated. Underarms, bikini and facial areas can be completed in a series of 15-minute sessions. Legs, backs and larger areas can take one to two hours.
One key consideration is that several sessions will be required to completely remove all the hair in the target area permanently. The simple reason for this is that effective hair reduction is only achieved during the active growth phase. This means that the laser treatment will only be able to remove individual follicles of hair that are in this active phase. Hair that isn’t in the active growth phase will not be affected. However, with multiple sessions all hair can be removed, since with each session more hair will be in the active growth phase, and therefore susceptible for treatment.
Generally, permanent results are seen after approximately six treatments performed to a given area. We also recommend a gap between five to six weeks between sessions for the most effective results.
