Microneedling with PRP and Eclipse MicroPen

Microneedling is a popular procedure used for the face, neck, back, hands and décolletage skin. It has also become one of the latest “Hollywood” treatments to combat aging.  Dr. Green uses more than one method of microneedling at her NYC dermatology office. Aquagold is one method of microneedling the skin and can be combined with Botox and Belotero and other fillers as well.  The Eclipse Micropen is also an exceptional way of microneedling and can be combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments to rejuvenate the skin.

The Eclipse MicroPen is commonly used for acne scars and wrinkles. It consists of 12 microneedles that are then “rolled” over your skin. Many patients say that it feels like a light sandpaper being rubbed against the skin, and can take under 30 minutes to perform.  Healing time is relatively quick, with minor irritation and redness lasting only 24 to 48 hours. When PRP is combined with microneedling the skin is rejuvenated and the healing is promoted more quickly. Dermapen is another popular micro-needling option, however it is no longer FDA approved in the United States.

The simplicity of the treatment combined with the rejuvenating results, has made microneedling extremely popular both with the media, and with celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Demi Moore and the Kardashians.  In this video you can see Kim Kardashian using Dermapen or a variation of the Dermapen treatment: http://www.elle.com/beauty/makeup-skin-care/news/a14931/kim-kardashians-vampire-facial/

As is the case with PRP treatments for hair, you may need several treatments – one every few weeks for several sessions. The number of treatments you will need will be determined by Dr. Green during your consultation and depends on your the tone, texture, and quality of your skin. Patients with deeper wrinkles and scars will require additional treatment sessions with PRP and microneedling.

The rich growth factors contained in the PRP helps repair skin damage regenerates and produces new collagen over time. As a result, microneedling with PRP creates a youthful glow after the treatment is completed for a more healthy and beautiful complexion.

Effects of PRP and proteins within

PRP is activated to release at least eight essential growth factors and signaling proteins. And because the blood is  that of the patient, there is no risk of allergy or intolerance.  However, please disclose all medications beforehand when discussing treatment options.

Overall, there are a few growth factors in PRP. These include:

  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) – Helps regulate cell growth and stimulates keratinocyte and fibroblast production.
  • Transforming Growth Factor (TGF) – Promotes angiogenesis and the growth of new blood vessels.
  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) – An important signaling protein involved in both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis that can help growth of blood vessels.
  • Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) – Promotes angiogenesis, granulation, and epithelialization in order to repair injured tissue.
  • Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) – Promotes collagen growth and proteoglycan synthesis.
  • Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF) – Keratinocyte migration, differentiation, and proliferations helps to speed up skin regeneration.
