Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis, HealthCentral Investigates

HealthCentral review the link between psoriasis and psoriasic arthritis in their new article “Why Psoriasis Becomes Psoriatic Arthritis”. Dr Green explains the skin condition psoriasis is an inflammation which “leads to an overproduction of skin cells that build up to produce a red, scaly rash”. Of those who have psoriasis, 30% will also have psoriatic arthritis. Dr. Green says “in psoriatic arthritis, the inflammation affects the joints, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and swelling”.

Although the two conditions can be related as they are both linked to an immune response that causes inflammation, having one condition does not necessarily predict the other. Genetics, external risk factors and gut microbiome are all theories into how psoriasis may develop into psoriatic arthritis.
