Dr. Green Discusses POC Cancer Mortality Rates With HealthCentral

HealthCentral asks “Do POC really have higher skin cancer mortality rates?” and while white people make up the majority of skin cancers, “the five-year survival rate after a skin cancer diagnosis is just 65% for POC versus 91% for white people”. This difference is mainly caused by misinformation and disparity within the healthcare system.

Having darker skin provides more protection from sun damage but does not 100% protect from harmful rays. Furthermore, early detection can be difficult resulting in delayed diagnosis. Dr. Green weighs in and notes “the myth that darker skin tones cannot develop skin cancer is part of the reasons why skin cancers go unseen until later stages in [POC]”.
