For many individuals, hair loss or thinning hair is one issue that, although a cosmetic issue, can severely impact a person’s self confidence. In men, thinning hair, a receding hairline, or hereditary based male pattern baldness tends to be a genetic issue that gets worse as a person ages. This can impact women too, and often can be caused by issues with hormones. Hair regeneration treatments therefore tend to be dependent on the type of hair loss that is experienced by the patient.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment

Today there are a number of hair loss solutions available in the marketplace, including both non-surgical treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) or more invasive treatments such as hair transplants. Typically most people tend to prefer non-invasive procedures since they are a more straight forward technique, which patients can treat on a walk-in basis, while a hair transplant is not always a suitable treatment option for everyone.

The PRP procedure works by using the body’s own red blood cells to help with hair regrowth. Blood is taken from the individual and the PRP is removed from this blood. The platelets are then concentrated and re-injected into the scalp of the individual to help thicken existing hair. This is especially effective when hair loss is in the early stages.

Once the enriched blood containing the PRP is then injected into the patient’s scalp, then this will help stimulate natural hair growth and improve overall hair density in the treatment area. The good news is that the new hair growth will last a long time, but it should be noted that because hair loss is an on-going issue, additional treatments will be required to maintain the results.

A typical treatment plan for PRP involves a number of PRP treatments over a period of time. Typically PRP hair restoration procedures should be performed around every 4 to 6 weeks. Three sessions are generally required each time. Once the treatments have been carried out then the progress is then evaluated and at this point it is decided whether more hair restoration treatments with PRP therapy are required.

Other factors in hair regrowth

When it comes to hair regrowth, since there are many growth factors involved, a person’s results may vary, and it should be noted that not every male or female is a candidate for PRP injections. In these cases other non-surgical hair regeneration solutions may be a better option and these can be discussed with Dr. Michele Green.
