Recently the FDA has approved the use of two new products, Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne, for the treatment of nasolabial folds, which are also known as “laugh lines” or marionette lines’. Despite both these dermal fillers having only just been approved in the US, they have a long track record of proven results in Europe where they were released back in 2010.
What are Nasolabial Folds?
As we age, the skin in the face loses elasticity and tissue volume. Additionally, the repeated use of the muscles in the face, through activities such as smiling can also cause lines and wrinkles in the skin around the mouth area since the repetition stretches the skin, which forms wrinkles and “laugh lines.” Unfortunately, once these lines have formed it is not possible to remove them without some form of cosmetic intervention.
What is Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne
Restylane Refyne and Restylane® Defyne are new Hyaluronic Acid based fillers to plump wrinkles which are meant to give a more natural looking result than previously. Restylane Refyne was FDA approved to treat moderate wrinkles and folds from the nose to the mouth (Nasolabial Folds). Restylane Defyne was approved to plump and fill deep-set lines.
What is new is the type of Hyaluronic acid that is the key difference here. The new technology is called XpresHAn – it allows the Hyaluronic Acid gel to flex within your skin to move as you move your face. No matter what type of facial expression you make, whether it be smiling or frowning, the filler will not appear stiff or lumpy and the results will appear soft and natural.
The two different products ultimately tackle the same type of issue, but have been formulated to provide dermatologists like Dr. Michele Green with a more tailored approach to treating lines and wrinkles. This means that there are more options available to suit your individual needs. The key difference between Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne is that they differ in the amount of cross-linking found within the gel, which determines the amount of flexibility and support that the gels provides. Simply, Restylane® Refyne is a more flexible gel, whereas Restylane® Defyne is a more supportive gel, which can be used together to enhance and treat these deeper lines and wrinkles, which Dr. Green can discuss with you.
Female treated with Restylane in nasolabial folds
A Hyaluronic acid dermal filler is a gel that is based around a naturally-occurring substance found in the body. It is a transparent substance that is injected in the skin, which in turn creates additional volume within the skin resulting in the smoothing out and reshaping of the lines and wrinkles. HA dermal fillers are often used on the face to provide a more youthful appearance and reduce the signs of aging. Both these new fillers by Restylane specifically address the problem area of nasolabial folds.
Both Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne have been shown to improve laugh lines for up to twelve months after the initial treatment. This means that the injections last a long time and patients will not need to repeat the treatment as frequently as some of the other injections on the market. Another benefit of these injections is that they provide very natural looking results which is one of the key reasons that these new generation HA dermal fillers are welcomed by Dr. Michele Green.

Who is a candidate for Restylane Defyne and Refyne?
Individuals who have deep nasolabial lines and who want a natural appearing look to solve this problem are the ideal candidates. Those who have severe allergies with a history of severe reactions (anaphylaxis) should avoid this treatment. Additionally, if you are allergic to lidocaine, or to gram-positive bacterial proteins (used to make HA) then you should avoid using Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne.
