What is the Botox Lip Flip Procedure?

One of the latest trends and buzzwords that has become popular in recent months is a cosmetic procedure known as the “Botox Lip Flip,” but what exactly is this treatment? The goal of a “Botox Lip Flip” is to help the lips appear fuller and more plumper, giving it that youthful appearance.

Traditionally, a lip filler such as Juvederm is used for lip augmentation to give the appearance of a fuller lip area. Alternative options such as Restylane and Belotero may also be used for this purpose. This form of procedure is FDA approved and is a popular way of adding volume to the lip area.

One new method of giving the appearance of a fuller looking lip, or that “pout” look made popular by celebrities and models is to use the “Lip Flip” method. This procedure injects Botox around the mouth area, to relax the facial muscles surrounding the lips and make the lips curl upwards (for the upper lip) and downwards (for the lower lip), without the need to inject the lips themselves. This can help give the appearance of a poutier look and a fuller looking lip, since the curling of the lips will make them look slightly more open.

Why the Botox lip flip rather than a lip filler?

The key differences to using Botox instead of a lip filler is that the substance is not injected into the lips themselves, but instead in the surrounding areas. Another difference is the length of time that the effects will last. Traditionally, lip augmentation fillers and other lip injections last somewhere between six and twelve months depending on the type of Hyaluronic Acid based filler used in the procedure. Botox lasts for a shorter period of time, somewhere between three to six months in total.

Another key difference in using Botox around the mouth area, instead of for example, the forehead, is the quantity needed for the procedure. Generally, less Botox is used around the mouth area since the goal is to provide some minor relaxation of the localized mouth muscles without reducing the overall movement of the mouth area itself.

The overall goal of both a lip filler and the Botox Lip Flip is to provide the individual with added volume, a more pronounced looking and the look of bigger lips. Depending on what is required, such as the amount of volume hoped for and the length of time the client prefers the treatment to last for, this can dictate whether a different approach such as another type of lip filler, or if Botox may be more suitable. The best course of action here is to discuss your requirements with board certified dermatologist Dr. Michele Green to find out what options are available to you for lip enhancement overall beyond the “lip flip procedure” such as Juvederm Volbella, and what potential side effects may occur in each case.
