Glamour asks Dr. Green about At-Home Laser Hair-Removal Devices
Glamour asked various dermatologists and testers to try more than a dozen laser hair removal devices over the course of a year. In addition to that, while laser hair removal tends to work best on lighter skin tones, the article “7 Best At-Home Laser Hair-Removal Devices We Tested” asked Dr. Michele Green about the use of it on darker skin tones.
She notes in the article that “At-home laser hair-removal devices are not usually sensitive enough to tell the difference between pigmentation in the hair follicle and skin. Therefore, anyone with a darker skin tone is at higher risk for adverse side effects, such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and scarring,” so while home usage sounds easier and in this day and age there is laser technology that’s safe enough for various skin types, in some cases, those tend to be options like Nd:YAG lasers which are only available in office through a dermatologist.
The same holds true for hair color but the other way around – where it works better on darker hair colors. For example if you have red, or blonde hair, we recommend consulting a board-certified dermatologist about your options.
