NBC News Asks About the Difference Between Hair Shedding vs. Hair Loss

Dr. Green explains that hair loss and hair shedding are different conditions with different causes on NBC news today, for example Hair loss is often driven by hormonal imbalances, genetics, aging, autoimmune disorders (like Alopecia areata), thyroid issues, or sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone). In addition to that, women may also experience hair loss due to decreased estrogen after pregnancy, during menopause, or with birth control changes. Hair loss tends to be gradual and patterned (receding hairline, widening part, thinning crown).

Hair shedding (telogen effluvium) is typically temporary and triggered by stressors such as surgery, childbirth, illness, emotional stress, crash dieting, or rapid weight loss. Shedding usually begins about two months after a trigger and often resolves on its own. Dr. Green discusses both with the NBC News team and provided treatment insights on Minoxidil (Rogaine), Finasteride (Propecia), Spironolactone, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections and other treatment options, along with their side effects and potential hormonal affects.
