The Difference Between After-sun Lotion & Sunscreen: Travel & Leisure

With summer in full swing, plans happening and vacations ready – sunburns can still sneak up on us. Travel & Leisure took a look at 12 of the best after sun lotions of 2025. The article featured Dr. Green who was asked about what to get when they need something to “soothe, calm, and protect the skin after sun exposure” and can be applied “liberally to all areas that were exposed to the sun.”

Aloe vera and shea butter are common ingredients to look for but also look out for products like alcohol, fragrances, dyes, formaldehyde, or parabens, which are “known skin irritants” that can “lead to increased redness, inflammation, irritation, and peeling,” she noted.

Dr. Green provides (Tips for Buying After-sun Lotion) such as considering your skin type and needs along with how much you are bringing and your skin type, as dry skin may need different lotion types than others.  She also notes the difference between after-sun lotion and sunscreen – for example: sunscreen is meant to be used before sun exposure to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. On the other hand, after-sun lotions are intended to be used after sun exposure to help smooth and moisturize the skin. “After-sun lotion typically contains ingredients that reduce inflammation and irritation while locking in moisture,” she added.
