Time Magazine Asks Dr. Green If Gel Manicures Are Safe
It might not be as big a factor as a day in the sun, but Gel Manicures pose other risks too. For example, the UV and LED lamps used for curing gel nail polish emit UV radiation. “But then again, most of the country’s sitting outside without sunblock,” says Dr. Michele Green, in the time.com article “Are Gel Manicures Safe? Experts Explain the Risks.”
Although the UV exposure from a gel manicure is relatively brief, it’s highly concentrated—and over time, those sessions can accumulate, increasing the risk of skin damage over time. To help safeguard your skin, it is recommended to apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen to your fingers and the backs of your hands before each appointment. For even more protection, consider wearing a pair of opaque, fingerless gloves during the curing process. These small steps can go a long way in minimizing long-term UV exposure while still enjoying your manicure.
