Harpers Bazaar Consults Dr. Green on Growth Factor Serum
Today in “The 11 Best Growth Factor Serums, According to Dermatologists,” New York City–based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michele Green explains what growth factor serums do, who can use them, and how to work them into a routine.
“While a typical serum may only act on the outer or inner layers of the skin, growth factor serums work on a cellular level,” says Dr. Green. “The growth factors act as messengers within the skin to increase cell signaling and promote healing and growth.” She notes that these formulas are relatively new in skincare and “have yet to be studied for their long-term effects,” though early research is promising.
According to Dr. Green, growth factors can support collagen, stimulate cell growth, and help repair the skin’s moisture barrier, which is why many people notice improvements in texture, fine lines, and overall skin quality. She adds that, because growth factors are naturally occurring in the body, these serums can be a good option for sensitive skin.

For usage, Dr. Green recommends starting slowly, apply once a week and increase as tolerated. “Growth factor serum can be used both morning and night, but it is best used at night as the growth factors can provide intense repair and healing to the skin while you sleep,” she shares. You can pair a growth factor serum with retinol (serum first), but Dr. Green advises not using it at the same time as hydroxy acids or vitamin C, since “acids can deactivate the growth factors.”
