Men’s Health Look at Habits That Could Be Hurting Your Skin This Summer

You might have heard this one a few times recently with summer weather kicking in, but yes “sunscreen is the ultimate line of defense against harmful sun exposure and UV radiation,” says Michele Green, MD, in Men’s Health today where she talks with the team there about various habits that could be hurting your skin.  What is most surprising in the article is that only 12.3 percent of men aged 18 and older always used sunscreen when outside for more than an hour on a sunny day – but, beyond sunscreen/SPF, there are also other things guys need to be wary of.

One example is shaving hygiene, where Dr. Green adds that “after shaving, coarse or curly hair is more likely to curl and get trapped beneath the skin, resulting in razor bumps and ingrown hairs,” and to avoid picking at Ingrown Hairs, Pimples, or Rough Patches, because while a pimple may start small, but “acne can be non-inflammatory, clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, excess oil, and other impurities, or inflammatory, when bacteria are also trapped in the pores,” says Dr. Green. “Picking at a pimple can spread the pore’s contents into other areas of the skin and result in more acne, skin inflammation, scarring, and even spread the bacterial infection.”
