Are You Applying Deodorant at the Wrong Time? Here’s What Derms Recommend: April 2025

Dr. Green was quoted in “Are You Applying Deodorant at the Wrong Time? Here’s What Derms Recommend” at Realsimple.com.  She mentions that putting deodorant on clean, dry skin will help absorb the product better and so doing so on clean skin such as after a shower is ideal.

But days often include many activities, so what about in between? “Deodorant should be reapplied as often as necessary for you to feel clean and fresh,” Dr. Green says. “When you notice a smell or feel like the deodorant has worn off, then it’s time to reapply.”  There is no magic formula though as “everyone will benefit from deodorant differently, so what works for one person will be different from what works for another person,” Dr. Green says. “The best practice is to listen to your body and apply it whenever it makes the most sense for you.”

And in regards to treatments for hyperhidrosis, the best option is to consult with a dermatologist first. Find out more at https://www.realsimple.com/best-time-to-apply-deodorant-11721634

And while there is no “standard dose” of deodorant, the general recommendation is to apply two or three swipes of a stick or roll-on deodorant, two or three spritzes of a spray-on, or a pea-sized amount of cream or gel deodorant should suffice.

“While the amount of deodorant each person needs will vary, on average, most people will require a few swipes or a few seconds of spray,” says Michele Green, MD, in the article. “The goal is to achieve full coverage without causing product buildup” as using too much can be ineffective and wasteful.
