Study of Vitiligo and Skin Cancers in Cancer Therapy Advisor
A recent study noted that “Phototherapy May Not Increase Skin Cancer Risk in Patients With Vitiligo.”
The researchers identified 16 cases of Bowen disease and 79 cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer in the study as well as 34 instances of melanoma, but none of the numbers correlated with phototherapy sessions.
“It seems that patients who have vitiligo seem to possess some natural type of immunity to these more aggressive skin cancers,” Michele S. Green, MD, is quoted saying the article, though she was not involved in the study. She also noted that “Future studies should center on what is unique genetically that may help protect them and others against the risk of skin cancers.”
