Answers About Thermage from a Dermatologist
Many men and women would like to have a more youthful appearance but are put off by the idea of having a facelift. A facelift can get great results, but it is surgery, and does require a certain amount of down time for recovery. At the dermatology practice of Michele S. Green, MD, we have achieved very good results with the non-surgical Thermage face lift. It’s a great alternative for those who shy away from surgery.
Where Does Thermage Work Best?
Though Thermage can be used anywhere on the body, it works best on the face. The Thermage face lift is the most popular application of this technology. This non-surgical technique tightens and lifts the skin without a scalpel, general anesthesia, or other preparation and recovery needs that follow from a surgical facelift.
How Does It Work?
Thermage uses electromagnetic waves in the radio frequencies to uniformly heat deeper layers of skin. This is a gentle heating, and what it does is tighten existing collagen while stimulating the production of new collagen. Immediate collagen contraction after the procedure is followed by gradual collagen tightening as new collagen is made. The result is reduced wrinkling and a subtle lift to the brow, cheek, and jawline.
How Soon Are Results Apparent?
A study in 2007 of over 5,000 patients at multiple clinics reported that 87% showed some immediate tightening, and 92% experienced tightening six months later. Overall, 94% were pleased with how well the procedure met their expectation. Biopsies showed that patients did in fact have an increase in collagen. Though there may be initial tightening, the effects continue from one to six months.
How Long Do the Effects Last?
The effects of Thermage last for different times in different people, but studies show that the benefits are still apparent up to two years after treatment. As the aging and sun damage process continues, however, patients’ skin slowly returns to its previous condition. This regression happens with all skin restoration, including surgical facelifts. At the practice of Michele S. Green, MD, we have found Thermage to be a terrific alternative to surgery and have the experience patients should demand in order to get the best results.
