Preventing Skin Cancer in Youths: Appeal to Vanity

“WebMD reports on a health task force that counsels doctors to use appearance-based approaches for fair-skinned youth – a recommendation supported by Michele S. Green, MD. She treats patients with skin cancer as young as 7, and knows that many patients don’t use sun protection.”

“Appealing to a young person’s vanity by talking about the effect on appearance works better than talking about skin cancer, notes the task force and Dr. Green. I tell patients, ‘’If you keep going [without sun protection] you are going to need Botox before you are 30, and you will be wrinkled like a prune.” They tend to listen to that, she says.”
