Female pattern baldness involves a usual pattern of hair loss in women due to a combination of hormones, aging, and genes.
Causes
A hair typically grows an average rate of about half an inch per month. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, then rests, and then falls out. A new hair then grows in its place. At any given time, approximately 85% of your hair is growing and 15% is resting.
Baldness occurs when the hair falls out and new normal hair does not grow in its place. The reasons for this hair loss may be age, changes in the levels of hormones, and genetics. For many women, menopause causes the hair to be thinner, while having new coarser facial hair.
Treatment
The only drug currently approved by the FDA for female pattern baldness is Minoxidil (Rogaine). More than 25% of women have seen both a re-growth of hair and a slowing down of the progression of hair loss.
Spironolactone may also help women whose hair loss is caused by too much male hormones (androgens). This treatment has not been FDA-approved for female pattern baldness.
Dr. Green will assess the pattern of hair loss you are having and diagnose the type and design a treatment plan for you to regrow your hair. Hair loss may signal an underlying medical disorder and needs to be evaluated and treated appropriately.
