Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin Tones

*Disclaimer: Results may vary with each patient.

Dr. Michele Green’s NYC based office provides customized laser hair removal treatments that are tailored to your skin type, skin color and hair type. The ability to gain self-confidence by ridding oneself of hair in embarrassing places, and freedom from the monotony of shaving are just some of the benefits individuals seek through laser hair removal.

Unfortunately, Latin, African-American, Asian and other ethnic groups with darker skin tones were often discouraged from choosing laser hair removal treatments because of the procedure’s early reputation for damaging darker skin. That is a thing of the past however, since GentleYAG® is a solution that effectively treats all skin types. In fact Dr. Green has performed this treatment on skin types ranging from Asian, Mediterranean and Hispanic skin to African American skin, even tanned skin.

How the GentleYAG works

The GentleYAG® system is a non-invasive procedure that can remove unwanted body hair on all skin types without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. It uses laser light with a 1064nm wavelength which can be safely used on the face and body. It is non-ablative, which means it does not cut the top layer of your skin. The laser emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair follicle leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

GentleYAG can be used to treat all areas of the body. The most common areas include legs, arms, armpits, bikini line, back, chest, upper lip and chin. 4-6 sessions are needed, usually spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on location. The GentleYAG laser is also used for anti-aging treatments, such as spider veins, sunspots and wrinkles.

Laser hair is effective as a permanent reduction in hair to the treated area. However, each person is different, and therefore it is worth setting an appointment with Dr. Green beforehand to discuss options.

One key advantage of GentleYAG laser hair removal is that the procedure does not hurt, and can be done on an outpatient basis. Some topical anesthesia is applied by request, as some patients say the feeling of the laser is like that of snapping a rubber band against the skin and can cause minor irritation in some patients. Either way, you can continue regular activities later that day.

In addition to that, laser hair removal is less painful (and more economical) than electrolysis, waxing and shaving, so for a permanent solution – call our Upper East Side based offices at 212-535-3088 or contact Dr. Michele Green to book an appointment for laser hair removal.
