Dermal Fillers & Injectable fillers by age

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, over two million men and women have had injectable filler treatments per year in recent years. Some of the more common dermal fillers include Restylane®, Juvederm® (including new Juvederm Volbella), Voluma®, Sculptra®, Belotero® & Radiesse®.

However, what is the right option for each age group? For instance, most of these fillers use hyaluronic acid, which naturally decreases in our skin over time — in fact, women over 50 are estimated to have half the hyaluronic acid they had when they were in their 20’s, so there is certainly no “one size fits all” solution here.

Dermal Fillers In your 20’s

In recent years, dermal fillers have gained the most popularity amongst patients in their 20’s. Filler usage for the 20-somethings in the US have increased by over 33% in the last five years, and young celebrities such as Kylie Jenner are influencing this. Juvederm Voluma, Volbella, Juvederm Ultra Plus and Belotero Balance are among the popular options here, but in all cases it is important to consult a board-certified dermatologist such as Dr. Michele Green to determine which filler is best for you.

This is critical for younger patients, as they may be most likely to choose an injector based on price and choose a non-skilled and unqualified non-physician injector. The issue is that these cosmetic injections are true medical procedures and need to be performed by a board-certified dermatologist to avoid unnecessary adverse events or poor cosmetic outcomes.

Patients in their twenties, often combine injectable fillers with chemical peels, Clear+Brilliant, or microdermabrasion to smooth their skin and enhance their glow.

In your 30’s

For those in their 30’s, you may even remember that dermal fillers were a relatively new thing. These days, most fillers are made with Hyaluronic Acid, which is a natural compound one produces themselves. This has lowered the risk of getting a filler and of course increased the popularity.

Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport become options here for lines around the eyes, and often get combined with dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra and Perlane. It can also be combined with Thermage for tightening and lifting the skin to produce new collagen throughout the face and neck.

And while it’s difficult to start actively taking steps to prevent wrinkles and skin damage when you may show only a few signs of aging – this is the time to be proactive.

Dr. Green is highly trained in the art of fillers to soften one’s laugh lines (nasolabial folds). This is a common request for those in their forties. They’ve lost some facial collagen and fat, so seek a fullness in their face, their lips, and want to decrease the recent visibility of lines. Again, it is important that the doctor is aware of your background and how treatment differs by age. For instance, the older one gets, the more filler one needs in order to achieve the right result.

Popular fillers for men or women in their 40’s include Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft to increase lost facial volume. Combining injections with Thermage for nonsurgical lifting and tightening is essential in producing new collagen. Patients at this age also notice sagging jowls or fat being deposited under the chin. Kybella® is the ideal injection to reduce this excess submental fat. In some cases, if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, Dr. Green may recommend Clear+Brilliant, VBeam or Fraxel to remove sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers in your 50’s, 60’s and 70’s

You’ve laughed a lot through the years and the signs are starting to show. Dermal filler for those laugh lines will give you more to smile about. Once again, Thermage can be used in order to tighten the skin of face, arms and legs, and produce new collagen in combination with dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma alongside Botox for the lines around the forehead and eyes. Juvederm Volbella is perfect for those “hard to treat” lines around the mouth. Dr. Green often combines Volbella with PRP and Microneedling to treat these perioral wrinkles.

At this age, fillers such as Sculptra can help produce new collagen, and Fraxel laser can help enhance the work done through the injections by reducing sun damage and smoothing out fine lines.
