Acne Scar Treatments for men

One of the worst skin conditions that can affect self-esteem is acne. Both men and women can suffer from acne and in the United States it is a very common condition that can affect most people at some point in their lives. For some people acne can reoccur regularly and if not treated effectively can cause scarring.

For men who are suffering with either extended issues with acne outbreaks or from scarring there are a range of treatments available on the market that can tackle acne. The first step is to discuss with Dr. Green what type of acne treatment will be the most effective in your own particular case. Since there are a number of different ways acne can manifest itself and cause acne scarring it is important to choose a treatment plan that will provide the best long-term results for you.

Types of Acne Treatments Available

Men who are currently experiencing problems with an ongoing condition can get the acne under control using a number of different methods. During your consultation with Dr. Green, you can discuss your treatment plan since there are many treatments available and the proper one must be decided on an individual basis. However some of the treatments available range from topical antibiotics, which can help reduce surface bacteria, or exfoliate and clean up the skin – to oral medications, which can also be effective in the treatment of acne, as can injections and extractions. Some of the options available at our NYC location include the following:

eMatrix – For men with darker skin tones such as Asian, Mediterranean or Latin, one of the best treatments is eMatrix. This treatment uses radiofrequency to target the deeper dermal layers of skin whilst avoiding the upper layers where there is pigmentation. This means that there is little risk of hyperpigmentation.

Fraxel – Another suitable treatment for acne scars, including ice pick and boxcar scarring is the Fraxel Dual laser treatment. This ‘two in one’ laser can be used to both treat acne damage but also can be used to reduce the signs of aging such as sun damage and discoloration. And one of the additional advantages of this treatment is that minimal down time is required afterwards, meaning those with a busy schedule can carry on with their day.

Microneedling – Another acne treatment option for male patients is Microneedling. Also commonly known as collagen induction therapy, Microneedling is a treatment that can be used to improve the condition of the skin. Microneeding is classed as a minimally invasive treatment and it is carried out using a device that creates small punctures into the top layer of the skin. The goal of Microneedling is to stimulate the body’s own collagen and elastin production. This technique can result in a much improved firmness and smoothness to the skin, and this in turn can reduce the scarring that is caused by acne. Microneedling can also be combined with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to help increase specific growth factors which heal the skin and scar tissue.

Bellafill -The treatment of acne scarring in men can also be treated with dermal filler injectables such as Restylane or Bellafill. To treat acne with Bellafill the filler is injected into the skin and collagen is then absorbed. The effects of the filler can be seen almost immediately but the complete effects that the filler will achieve will not be fully revealed for a few months. Bellafill can last up to five years in duration, and most patients will require two treatments. However, Bellafill might not be suitable in all cases as some individuals can occasionally be allergic to cow collagen or have other similar allergies. Bellafill requires skin testing one month before the injections to ensure you are not allergic. It is important to discuss these issues with Dr. Michele Green before treatment commences since an alternative procedure may be chosen for you.
